Afro-Mandala

sculpture

Sapien (aka Steve Anwar), UK
Material: stainless steel
Location: The memorial is a monumental-standalone sculpture, installed in front of the two buildings, integrated into the steps and fitted with two functional seating elements

The sculpture is inspired by ancient Mandalas and African weaving. The vision for the project is to create a highly visible gateway/landmark to help transform the daily lives of the local communities, and help draw attention to the Berlin Global Village, creating a strong identifcation. Circles and mandalas posses a profound spiritual essence. Universally, mandalas represent infinity, they stand as symbols of unity, mental freedom, and multicultural society. The spiritual piece embodies resilience on both a physical and metaphorical level, serving as a powerful symbol of our collective strength as a global community, highlighting the idea that we are stronger when we stand together.

The mandala is made up of twenty-four segments to allude to the passing of time. Half will be made from Corten Steel to remember past lessons and wisdom. Half will be made from polished Stainless Steel to refect present truths and future dreams. At the heart of the sculpture lies a core crafted from specialised, blue-tinted, mirror-polished stainless steel. This material serves to illuminate the human spirit. The words and hole patterns are drilled into the panels. The messages would be developed through community workshops. The outer skeleton of the sculpture is formed from steel tubes which loosely represent the branches of a tree, with vegetal fibres woven throughout the structure. The panel to sit on shape are based loosely on tribal shields which are symbols of resilience, protection and African ceremonies, and contain words taken from community workshops, written in several languages.
