community garden with installative and sculptural elements

Nina Berfelde, Germany
Material: plants/ wood
Location: Multi-level raised beds for plants with steps and seating will be created between the buildings along the access path. Both facades will be fitted with trellis. A net-like »bed« will span between the buildings

The projects suggests a community garden used as a learning space and social sculpture. Across the four seasons, the plants on the walls and in the air become a walkable »calendar«. For each season, a programme of activities will be proposed. It will be a place for people to linger, exchange, occupy themselves from sowing to harvesting, and for workshops.

In the garden, non-hierarchical »sustainable and process-based practices, community and the necessity of resting will equally be conveyed.« The selected plants will be frost-resistant, light and a source of food for insects. The beds will be planted in accordance with permaculture principles and will combine native edible plants with those from the Global South.

Artists from the diaspora, Berlin and from the Global South will lead workshops to discuss the geographical and historical origin of plants. In the low-threshold workshops people can learn about colonialism, decolonisation, and all about gardening, such as nutrition, water, climate change, soil. Economically, a process to maintain the garden in the long run will be developed.
