A hub for digitalization issues from a global perspective

The world has long been digitized and mediatized, but its ecological, economic and social design is lagging behind the technological possibilities. Political development is dependent on initiatives that create a space for encounters and exchange in order to develop and verbalize corresponding demands and bring them into society. The hub in the Berlin Global Village will be the place where development policy, migrant-diasporic and North-South cooperations develop new approaches together with actors from the network and digital policy scene and are committed to sustainable digitalization. Innovation can only emerge in a transdisciplinary environment in which actors from practice, research and activism can come together. This is where the most diverse actors and discourses come together, which are thematically linked but have not yet been brought together to this extent.

The Berlin Global Village brings together fragmented ideas and approaches, be it the creation of equal access to global and local infrastructures, fair IT, democratization of global processes or the promotion of climate and gender justice. The digital empowerment for development policy and migrant-diasporic civil society, which is also actively pursued with the hub, moves the topics and concerns of One World work even more strongly into the digital space. Digital-political associations and actors are gaining strength and potential thanks to the globally networked and practical work in the center, as well as the good infrastructure. In addition, exchange, networking and co-design with and by digital actors from the Global South are established and strengthened. The Digital Hub creates lasting connections with digital innovators from the Global South. The transfer of knowledge goes in both directions.

From a global perspective, the digital world is multifaceted and complex, full of opportunities and challenges. So far, Berlin has lacked a place where these issues can be addressed in a structured and solution-oriented manner, although the recent past in times of a pandemic has made it clear how urgently a globally oriented, digitally strengthened civil society is needed. The Digital Hub will fill this gap by bringing together a unique mix of stakeholders to jointly shape digitalization in a globally equitable and sustainable way.

The location: Above the rooftops of Berlin - right in the middle of the innovation area

Berlin Global Village gGmbH has proven in recent years that it is capable of creating innovative structures while keeping to time and cost schedules. The Digital Hub will be located on the still unused top floor of the existing building. Collaborative workspaces with state-of-the-art digital infrastructure will be created here, enabling hybrid formats. Synergies can be found not only in the building itself, but also in the immediate vicinity: on the first floor of the same building is the "WeltRaum", a learning space with modern digital technology.

Right next door on the former Kindl site, which is increasingly developing into an innovation center for civil society, is the "Impact Hub", which has already entered into a partnership with the Berlin social start-up scene. In addition, structured partnerships are being developed with various players in the education sector. For example, "Mediale Pfade e.V." offers educational projects and the "Makers Space". Professionalization of black people and people of color with "Black in Tech gUG", strengthens marginalized people and also enables international networks in the global South. Linked to existing Berlin digital actors and an international network, "Global Innovation Gathering e.V." is part of the Digital Hub with its many years of expertise. In addition, a renowned Berlin university, Alice Salomon Hochschule, with its profession for critical media in conjunction with the project "Global We Media" by "Joliba e.V." will contribute to the understanding of critical digital media and actively support the Digital Hub as a strong ally within the framework of an international cooperation with the "Bamenda Film School" in Cameroon. There are synergy opportunities directly in the building, also in the immediate neighborhood and in the emerging network.
